Susan Smart, LM, CLDT

Susan Smart, LM, CLDT

Susan has been attending births since 1987 when she attended her first VBAC birth as a labor support person.   She taught Bradley Natural Childbirth classes for 3 years before beginning her Midwifery Education Foundation studies.  She worked with a European trained midwife and a Licensed Midwife for 4 years before she licensed in 1991 to provide primary care to pregnant women and has attended births as a Licensed Midwife in the home since then.  She currently works attending births in the home and birth center and serving as doula / labor support for those wishing to have a hospital birth. She provides water birth care, as well.

Susan has become a teacher to those who wish to become doulas and / or midwives.  She provides doula training for those wishing to certify as a CAPPA Certified Doula.  Doula training courses are offered twice a year in the upstate and in Columbia.  She developed and teaches a midwifery training course, Dar la Luz Midwifery Studies, for those wishing to follow a direct entry path to midwifery.  This course is a  DHEC Midwifery Advisory Council approved course for the teaching of Licensed Midwife Apprentices.

Susan has had three children with hospital, birth center, and home birth experiences.  Her home birth caused her to want to offer this option to more women seeking to have good birth memories.  Susan is married to Bob, a horticulturist,  and they are grandparents to two beautiful grandsons who were welcomed into the world by their grandmother at home.   Susan and Bob are quite involved in their church, Sandy Springs Baptist Church, where they are involved in the music ministry, missions, and teaching.  They, also, enjoy hiking, biking, and reading.
